So You Want To Be An Entrepreneur – Part 3

As we continue on our journey of discovering our calling as entrepreneurs, we need to realize that being a business owner or starting a business may not be for everyone.  So, it is important to know exacting what we are getting into before we do.  We started with the first 5 questions in the previous article. In this article we will continue asking the next 5 questions that will help us answer the BIG question, which is whether you start that business.

How willing are you to do the work?

You cannot expect your employees to make sacrifices that you are not willing to make.  It is your business, and it is important that you set a precedent from the onset, and lead by example. You need to set the example of how you expect your employees to function by doing it yourself.  If you work hard, they will work hard.  If you are lazy and cut corners, they will also be lazy and cut corners.

How do you handle failure?

If something is not working in your business, are you open to changing it and trying something else, even if it means accepting suggestions from the least?  Being willing to try something new does not make you a failure. It shows that you are willing to learn, and this is the mentality you want your employees to have. Failure is just another learning curve, and an opportunity to learn something different. If you can handle failure and are open to learning from it, you will make a great impact not only on your employees but also on everyone who is watching you and waiting for you to fail. As the saying goes, you are not a failure if you fall, but you are a failure if you don’t get up and try again,

Do you believe that everything revolves around you, and so you take everything personally?

An employee not agreeing with you, is not necessarily a reflection on you.  It may just be a difference of opinion, which you should appreciate.  Be willing to seriously consider the suggestions given by others and not making it about you, is a valuable gift.  It may just be the change your business needs in order to succeed. Wisdom is found in the company of many, so be open to others.

How healthy are you?

Now I can just hear many of you asking why this question is included here.  It is simple.  If you are not eating properly, sleeping well, and generally looking after yourself, apart from not setting a good example for your employees, you will not be effective and efficient in business. We often make stupid mistakes when we are tired, so itis important that you adopt a healthy lifestyle.

How easy is it for you to ask for help when you need it?

This is one that I have struggled with.  It is not easy for me to ask for help, but as an entrepreneur, there will be times that you will have to ask for help.  There is no way that you will be able to do everything yourself.  That is just not possible.  Do yourself a favor, and ask for help when you need it.

That is it for today. Take time to work through these questions, as they could very well be the key to your next step. I know it is time-consuming and feels like a total waste of time, but try it out. You may end up thanking us for it in time to come.
